Relationship between proximity-to-failure and acute neuromuscular fatigue. Data shown are expressed as a percentage decrease in lifting velocity with a fixed load from pre-exercise to 4 min post-exercise (displayed as a positive value to indicate an increase in neuromuscular fatigue) in response to six sets performed on the barbell bench press exercise to either momentary muscular failure (FAIL), 1-RIR, or 3-RIR.
